That’s the amount of plastic produced every twelve months which is the same as 50 MILLION pounds a month, or 1.6 million pounds per day…after day, after day. That’s what it takes to make the water bottles, containers, sports equipment, medical supplies, discs, etc. It never stops, and the real question to ask ourselves is: where does it all end up? Look, we’re never going to end the use of plastics during any of our lifetimes, but we can certainly reduce what we choose individually to help lessen the burden on our planet in absorbing a non-organic material that does not go away. Even if we burn it so it disappears from our sight, the chemicals produced are toxic and so is the ash that remains. So, consider and hopefully set your intention to seek alternatives to plastic disposables, and only purchase plastics when necessary.
Here are a few simple ideas:
- Give up plastic bags
- Skip the plastic straw
- Start a habit of using a stainless steel or reusable non-plastic bottle
- Avoid plastic packaging (write a letter to the makers of your favorite products and tell them you want an alternative)
- Recycle what you can
- Never litter (this keeps plastics out of our waterways and ocean)
