This chilly weather has reminded me about a beautiful, quiet ministry here at Trinity Presbyterian Church that many might not know about or think about on a regular basis. My name is Tamara Jenkins, I am the Deacon overseeing the Prayer Shawl Ministry and I’d like to share with you about what this wonderful group does through God’s love and how you can get involved.
This group was formed here in 2009 and since then over 1,000 shawls have been made and prayed over for members and friends of Trinity Presbyterian Church in our community and all over the world. Shawls are handmade then blessed and sent out to provide comfort and a reminder of God’s love in times of crisis, pain, celebration or support. Shawls are made for adults, children or infants. One of my favorite shawls is a pocket shawl for students, medical personnel, military, fire or police officers.
The group meets at TPC twice a month during the day along with a sister group from St. Gabriels where they enjoy fellowship, laughter, prayer and lots of knitting.
How can you get involved?
You can help the ministry in three ways:
- Donate yarn to the ministry.
- Become a knitter yourself! The group takes all levels of knitters and will teach you to be a master level knitter in no time. If you can’t join the group during their meeting times you can knit at home and donate your shawls.
- Pray for this beautiful ministry and all the recipients that have received a shawl.
If you know someone who would benefit from a Prayer Shawl, please contact Jo Whitmill at prayershawl@mckinneytpc.org and ask her to show you the beautiful scrapbooks she has filled with photos, prayers and letters from many recipients.
We hope you consider participating in this ministry and if you know someone who would enjoy knitting, share the information with them! The Prayer Shawls ministry is just another way we care for one another.
Tamara Jenkins
Note: Because the shawls take 6 weeks to 3 months to make they are usually only given out once to a member or friend of Trinity.
