Join us on Earth Day, April 23rd, and celebrate with us a day dedicated to bring awareness about the importance of caring for creation, what we call Earth Care Sunday. We will have several activities and demonstrations to show you how you can be a Co-creator with God and become intentional about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling.
EARTH CARE CONGREGATION
Trinity Presbyterian Church became an Earth Care Congregation (ECC) in 2008. For almost a decade now, our church has captured and recycled most of the paper, plastic, cardboard and aluminum that comes through its doors. Thanks to this effort, our congregation diverts around seven cubic yards of waste from local landfills every month. If we stacked that waste up over nine months, piling paper upon paper and then adding other recyclables, we could build a tower that rivals the Empire State Building. And this doesn’t include the electronics and textiles we collect through annual recycling events, which allow unwanted objects to be re-purposed and reused in various creative and useful ways. All these initiatives have been lead by the Creation Care team.
OUR YOUTH ON EARTH DAY
The Youth and Children’s ministries at TPC actively instruct and reach out to the community to bring an awareness for creation. During the month of April the Youth ministry has been practicing the “No Straws” campaign to reduce plastic use. Over 500,000,000 plastic straws are used everyday and simply thrown away. Hence, this plastic stays in our environment forever, plastic does not decompose. By simply forgoing a straw, we can make a positive impact on the environment! Additionally, with the direction of the Children’s Ministry, our children are learning about recycling and are working on a project to benefit our Good Earth Community Garden.
THE CREATION CARE TEAM
We invite you to celebrate Earth Care Sunday, April 23 in Eva Joplin Hall to acknowledge the Creation’s Care intentional REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLING campaign. Members of Trinity’s Creation Care team will be on hand to illustrate some of the small steps you can take to walk more gently upon God’s beautiful creation. Come by for a small gift and a fun “how to” craft, and we’ll answer any questions you may have about recycling, while illustrating how simple it can be when you stick to four basic rules. Also, we will be selling Trinity’s reusable shopping bags, great for library books or groceries, along with our heavy-duty aluminum drinking bottles, which can be washed and reused again and again.
HOW YOU CAN CARE FOR CREATION
We invite you to participate in our recycling campaign. For the month of April, TPC is partnering with the World Wear Project to raise money for our Youth Ministry while helping the environment. The World Wear Project makes gently worn clothing and shoes affordable to people domestically and internationally who might otherwise be unable to afford new clothing. The bin holds between 350-1,000 pounds of clothes and shoes and Trinity’s youth will be paid a small fee per pound of everything collected. It will remain throughout the month of April, so if you’re spring cleaning, consider bringing used clothes, shoes, belts, linens, backpacks, stuffed animals, all unneeded clothing and placing in the bin. The BIG BLUE BIN is located in the parking lot, the area between Trinity and The Chateau.
We look forward to seeing you on Earth Day and encourage you to become an active advocate for Creation, because Trinity cares for creation!
